A Poker Addiction :: Personal Narrative Descriptive Papers
A Poker Addiction As Manny sits there, with half the chips he began with, he faces the hardest decision of the night. Does he call? Does he fold? There are so many things to consider, so much at stake. As the seconds tick by, flashes of frames from the World Series of Poker pass before his eyes; Johnny Chan slapping his cards down on the table, calling out ââ¬Å"All in,â⬠in front of God knows how many people. He sees Phil Hellmuth with his chin supported on his hands, shuffling chips and staring down his opponent. He smirks at the thought of Chris Moneymakerââ¬â¢s famous bluff against Sam Farha. Heââ¬â¢s glad he doesnââ¬â¢t need to bluff this hand; he has very solid cards in front of him. At this point the adrenaline rush that is going through his body is one like no other. It is a mixture of excitement, nervousness, and competitiveness. It is a feeling players love to hate. They hate having it, but they love wanting it. As all these scenes pass before Mannyââ¬â¢s eyes, he suddenly gets an urge to be bold and risky. He decides that calling his opponent would just weaken his position. ââ¬Å"It would only make him think that I have a losing hand and am hoping for the bestâ⬠, he reasons, ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢m all inâ⬠he then says, and slaps the cards down on the table in a Chan-like manner. Now it is up to Alex, it is his turn to decide whether to fold or call. Alex, though, is sure he has Manny beat, he gives Manny a smirk and says, in a Russian accent imitating the KGB guy from the movie Rounders, ââ¬Å"I call.â⬠All of sudden everyone is interested. One of these guys is about to lose all his chips. ââ¬Å"Flip ââ¬Ëemâ⬠somebody yells. As Manny flips his cards the whole table gets a look at them, A-K, an enviable hand. Alex flips his: 10-10, also a good hand. Alex definitely has an advantage, with a pocket pair. Both players look at each other and then back down at the table. Manny is hoping his bold move doesnââ¬â¢t backfire on him, and Alex just wants to finish the hand without having a heart attack. Here come the next three cards, also known as the flop, 7-9-K. Manny sighs as he sees his King, he is now in the lead. Examine the role of processes in schools in producing different educational achievement among pupils from different social groups. :: essays research papers fc
Examine the role of processes in schools in producing different educational achievement among pupils from different social groups. Differential educational achievement is unquestionable affected by different social groups however this is not the only factor that affects the educational success of students. Members of working class place a lower value on education, they place less emphasis on formal education as a means to personal achievement, and they see less value in continuing school beyond the minimum leaving age. They place a lower value on achieving higher occupational status, when evaluating jobs they place emphasis on stability, security and immediate economic benefits and tend to reject the risks and investments involved in aiming for high status occupations. Job horizons tend therefore to be limited to a good trade. Manual and non-manual jobs account for differences in outlook and attitude, middle-class occupations provide an opportunity for continuous advancement in income and status but this is not the case for manual workers. They reach full earning capacity relatively quickly and are provided fewer opportunities for promotion. This would therefore affect the attitude of parents and this attitude and outlook on life would be passed on to the next generation. Pupils from w orking class origins would be socialized in certain situations, e.g. fatalism, immediate gratification, present time orientation and collectivism. Parental interests in their children education effects school achievement, middle class parents express interest in their children progress, they are more likely to want their children to do well and stay at school beyond the minimum leaving age level and so will encourage them to do so. Middle class children also tend to receive greater stimulus from their parents in the early years, which forms a basis for high achievement in the educational system. Different social groups have different life experiences and chances, the habitats of each group will be different and will lead individuals to make certain choices regarding behaviour. Through up bringing and education, people learn to be able to express good taste; those with legitimate taste can mix in the most culturally advantaged circles. This gives students with higher-class backgrounds more chance of success in education. Social inequality is reproduced in the educational system and as a result is legitimated, and is particularly effective in maintaining the power of the dominant classes. Social class is not the only thing that affects educational achievement. Ethnicity has been seen to affect the educational attainment of pupils; research by Drew (1995) found that Afro-Caribbean males were at the bottom of each class group in terms of attainment.
Pat Tillman Essay
Situation Analysis of Tillman Story Stephen Stone Black Sheep, Tillmanââ¬â¢s platoon, had to make it to Mana on time. However, they had an inoperable vehicle with them that had to bring back to the FOB, forward operating base. Black Sheep could not abandon the vehicle. There only viable option was to bring it to a nearby paved highway for a wrecker to pick it up. Luckily, they came across a local who could tow it to the highway. However, they ran into an another problem.Whether to split the group or not; Either have the whole platoon escort the local to the highway, split the platoon and have one half escort the local while the other half continued on with the mission, or let the local tow it alone. Black Sheepââ¬â¢s leaders agreed that splitting the platoon would be inviting unnecessary danger and allowing the local to tow the vehicle alone was not even possible. However, the order came down from higher that the platoon would be split in order to stay on schedule. Black Sheep was split into two groups, Serial 1 and Serial 2.Serial 2 will escort the local while Serial 1 continues on with the mission. During this time, there were several miscommunications between headquarters and the platoon. Serial 2ââ¬â¢s original path was a difficult and harsh terrain. The local offered an easier and quick path that Serial 2ââ¬â¢s leader agreed upon. The local took the front of the convoy and led Serial 2 along the newly decided path. However, they came upon indirect fire, which was later, identify as mortar fire. The local stopped and took cover, which resulted in blocking the convoy on the narrow strip of pass.Serial 2ââ¬â¢s members had to force the driver to drive in order to the convoy out of the danger zone. Serial 1 heard the firefight near Serial 2 and went towards it to provide fire. However, communications between Serial 1 and Serial 2 was never established during the incumbent firefight. As Serial 1ââ¬â¢s members got into position, Serial 2 mistake nly Serial 1 as hostiles. During the firefight, Serial 1 was engaged with the PID, positive identification, of the enemy while calling out ceasefire towards Serial 2.While all along, Serial 2 was engaged with who they believed was the enemy. Attached to Serial 1 was a AMF, afghan military force, soldier, who wasnââ¬â¢t properly briefed upon to the platoon. Serial 2 mistaken the AMF soldier as an enemy and Serial 1 members near him as hostiles, even though, neither Serial 1 member or AMF soldier were wearing the traditional uniform of the enemy and wearing US Army uniform. Tillmanââ¬â¢s group was fire upon and hit. Most of the platoon was deafen by the firefight. It took a few minute before Serial 2 recognized the ceasefire and the aftermath, in which they called for help. Black Sheep had two killed in action, KIA, and few injured from the firefight mainly due to the friendly fires. One of the contributing factors to the deaths in Black Sheep was the leadershipsââ¬â¢ devotion to staying on schedule. Leadership continuously sacrifice rangerââ¬â¢s advantages in battle to make up lose time and get back on schedule. The leadership didnââ¬â¢t provide their men enough time to prepare for the mission or at least properly brief their squad. For example, the AMF soldier was supposed to be introduce to the platoon, so friendly fire would not fall upon him like it did. The one of rangersââ¬â¢ standards of operation, SOP, is to operate at night in order to provide them the advantage over the enemy. At night, ranger has a huge advantage over the enemy through technology means and night takes away most of the control from enemy with roadside bombs. However, during the daytime, the enemy has an easy observation of US armed forces and optimal control of their use of roadside bombs and improvises explosive devices, IEDs.I would have further delay the platoon to give the platoon time to brief. I would have stuck to the SOP and used the guises of night to move out . One of the main contributing factors for the outcome was communication. Communication between the platoon and headquarters, communication between squads, and communications inside the squads had several flaws. Headquarters didnââ¬â¢t establish properly with the platoon. Headquarters didnââ¬â¢t take any of the suggestion or opinions from the platoon leaders into account and stuck to their schedule. Also, headquarters didnââ¬â¢t clarify on certain items nor didnââ¬â¢t the platoon make sure the intention of commander with items such as the route to the highway. Communications between squads were made hasty or were never established. During the firefight, the radio was crowded with Serial 2 taking to understand the situation so communication between Serial 1 and 2 was never established. Due to the noise from the firefight and time of day, verbal and visual communication for ceasefire and signs of friendly was not established in time. Communication within squads was never pr operly established. If there was proper channels established, the radio might had been less crowded allowing room for Serial 1 to establish communication. Also, PIDs might have been properly established if communication was established with the squads. Due to the lack communication with Serial 2, there was no PID on the enemy, where Tillman was at, but Serial 2 continued to fire. I wouldââ¬â¢ve again allowed for more time to the platoon to establish and/or go over the protocols to use the radios, if the radio goes down, reminders of rules of engagement, to ask questions, and such. The lack time and hasty movement contribute to the breakdown of communication which enflame the disarray that surrounded the firefight. I would have sacrifice the time in order to not send my platoon into unnecessary danger. Army doesnââ¬â¢t want to engage an enemy if we donââ¬â¢t not have an overwhelm advantage. We do not want to set up ourselves for failure. However, when the leadership of Black S heep didnââ¬â¢t provide enough time to platoon to prepare and took away various advantages of the rangers in order to stay on schedule. The leadership was setting up the rangers for failure.

The art of dirty deeds
English Coursework Robert Hoarsely Another cupboard smashed onto the heavy oak table as the maelstrom of debris continued to swirl, fuelled by the vicious wind from the broken windows. There was a resounding crack as a chair was hurled at the table. ââ¬Å"You left me to rot, you are no son of mine,â⬠wailed the lady of the house. He couldn't see her, she was invisible, but he knew all too well she was there as he cowered under the table. The rain continued to pound down, its staccato beat all too loud through the broken windows.Lightning flashed as he made a break for the door that was banging against the wall in the mind. An Inhuman shriek came from behind him. He raced through the door as the table he had been taking refuge hurtled after him into the doorway in a shower of plaster and splinters. The main hallway he was now in was dominated by a huge glittering chandelier. He paused for a moment to catch his breath as he heard his mother howling in rage. With a groan the chand elier above him ripped away from the ceiling. It fell onto him with a crash, landing In an explosion of glittering glass like a frenzied rave of fireflies. He had barely enough time to think as It knocked him cold. As he flitted in and out of consciousness he remembered how he came to be in that current predicament. Don't go daddy,â⬠said his daughter. ââ¬Å"We want you to be here for Christmas daddy,â⬠whined his son. ââ¬Å"Of course I'll be back for Christmas; I'm Just off for a week to get granny's old stuff from her house in the Yorkshire Dales. It'll only be a week you know that and Ill tell you what, Ill bring extra Christmas presents. ââ¬Å"Do be careful Mr. Jerome,â⬠said the nursemaid as she ushered the children onto the pavement. ââ¬Å"l will,â⬠Mr. Jerome said as the children chorused goodbyes , he climbed into the carriage and with a flick of the driver's reins the arraign picked up speed down the misty London street. He vaguely remembered the trai n Journey as the inky blackness swept past, punctuated by lights of villages. He Intended to collect family heirlooms and other valuables to distribute to his family back In London. The dark looming mass of the house had dwarfed him as he had stepped off the carriage. Its Imposing bulk seemed to swallow all living things through its gloomy shaded windows and solid looking front door. It was big enough to take a week to go through all the rooms to get what he needed, then sort them. Lang resounded throughout his head as the huge chandelier was savagely picked up and hurled Into the solid wooden front doors. Then there was a deafening silence In the house. The rain continued to beat down outside and the wind ripped at the garden but the house was silent once more.Rubbing his head, he climbed the grand staircase, still wary of the ghost of his mother. He made his way to the study where there were three traveling trunks, two of which were full of the valuables and the other was to be fil led with Important documents. There was the distinctive tang of smoke but his thoughts were on other things. The door handle felt unusually warm as he opened leaping flames that had already consumed his traveling trunks and was taking hold of the rest of the room in a fiery, swirling inferno.Coughing from the swirling smoke he stumbled into the hallway. It was spreading rapidly, too fast to be any normal fire. His mother, he thought, she was burning down the house, the house he had been brought up in, the house she had lived in for over 60 years. As he watched, smoke streamed out of other rooms in tendrils and the smell of smoke was overpowering. He was trapped; he was going to be burned alive, scorched and screaming in this twisted, sick house.

Impact of Stress on Student Health Essay
The impact of stress on students who attend college or universtiy has a tangible negative effect on both physical health, and mental health. Many healthy habits from living at home (such as eating well) become obsolete, and students face a lot more deadlines as well as new responsibilities when they move away from home to go to school. Addition of stressors to a persons life not only has an effect on physical health, but it can change the way we behave and feel. Stress affects people on a physical and mental level, and it is important that we acknowledge the overwhelming nature of stress so we can properly take care of ourselves. Stress is able to have an effect on physical health because stress keeps your body in a perpetual state of fight-or-flight by producing cortisol, which is a hormone produced by the body to respond to stress. Cortisol is useful in fight-or-flight situations because: it heightens memory functions, lowers sensitivity to pain, and allows for a quick burst of energy. Elizabeth Scott, in her article Cortisol and Stress: How to Stay Healthy, states that ââ¬Å"While cortisol is an important and helpful part of the bodyââ¬â¢s response to stress, itââ¬â¢s important that the bodyââ¬â¢s relaxation response be activated so the bodyââ¬â¢s functions can return to normal following a stressful event (Scott, 2011).â⬠The problem with constant elevated levels of cortisol is that it ââ¬Å"can weaken the activity of the immune system by preventing proliferation of T-cells (Kennedy, 2012).â⬠Mental health is also effected by stress in students. The demand for work output increases heavily when multiple classes begin scheduling projects and tests at the same time which often makes everyone on campus feel overwhelmed. Ultimately, stress causes unnecessary frustration and tension in the b ody which makes it more difficult to learn. According to an article on dealing with stress, some of the effects of stress on thoughts, feelings and behavior are: anger, anxiety, burnout, depression, feeling of insecurity, forgetfulness, irritability, problem concentrating, restlessness, sadness, fatigue, eating too much, not eating enough, sudden angry outbursts, drug abuse, and relationship problems (Nordqvist, 2009). Female rats were repeatedly stressed in an experiment, and their litters grew up to have altered long-term memory and cognitive alterations (Lordi, B., V. Patin, P. Protais, D. Mellier, and J. Caston. N.p., Aug. 2000.). Stress in the classroom has a real potential to hamper learning capabilities. Feeling overwhelmed or flustered puts students in a state of mind where they will have difficulties paying attention and retaining information in the classroom because they are distracted by one of the vast, trivial stressors in their life. A good example of the mental distraction students deal with would be going to be d and thinking you left the oven on. It would be extremely difficult to get to sleep until you got up to check the oven. It is important for students to recognize how stress can play a role in our lives because if we manage stress it is much healthier for our bodies (and grades) in the long run. Maintaining regular habits and doing assignments sooner than later, and learning to relax in stressful situations will keep your body from entering into a state of constant tension. Stress is a function that is beneficial in certain situations, but stress in modern times is mostly caused by school or work because the human body is still the same as it was when people were hunter/gatherers; it is not made for the traditional five-day work week. Stress has a negative impact on student health, but more importantly it has a negative effect on student grades. Works Cited Kennedy, Ron. ââ¬Å"Cortisol (Hydrocortisone)â⬠. Share your perspective on leadership in the workplace and describe how Essay
Share your perspective on leadership in the workplace and describe how it has been shaped by the increasing influence of globalization - Essay Example This paper focuses on identifying few underlying factors that affect leadership methods in the contemporary organizational setup. McShane states, ââ¬Å"Globalization refers to economic, social and cultural connectivity with people in other parts of the worldâ⬠(p.8). From this perspective, globalization has serious implications for business leaders, especially in multinational organizations. These organizations require diverse workforce as well as diverse leaders that possess awareness of influence of cultural, political and social aspects on business. Globalization has resulted in easier accessibility of technology, information, data and products/services. It has also resulted in stiffer competition among organizations and greater passion of people to achieve more in less time, contrary to the conventional steady growth rate powered by profits and bureaucracy. Leaders in contemporary workplace embody these implications in the form of aggression in their business conduct, growth and aspirations. As a result, evidences of businesses booming and going bust have surfaced in recent past. Secondly, globalization has caused organizational struggle for existence, and sustenance is extremely difficult besides opening up opportunities to expand and develop. These opportunities have in fact caused paradigm shifts of leaders in different parts of the world. For instance, the Chinese managers are becoming increasingly individualistic contrary to their collectivistic culture. The research also reveals lowered commitment of new managers to their traditional values, here Confucianism (Ralston et al, 425). Mindset of future managers is changing rapidly towards embracing global strategies and challenges, which means leaders/managers are adapting to international management styles irrespective of their cultural background (Peng & Shin, 179). Despite leadersââ¬â¢ adjustments to the process of globalization, many businesses continue

Legal Thinking Assignment Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 250 words
Legal Thinking - Assignment Example In inertial, the consistency in principle supposes that people are entitled to legal rights that follow from legislation and precedents that enforce coercion. Legal Interpretivism would be most useful for front-line supervisors. The reason is that legal interpretivism holds that there is no distinction between law and morals and that morality is non-existence outside of the law. As such, legal interpretivism is usually opposed to natural law theory and that it decides the morality of any situation. Like the constructivist style, interpretivists focus on integrity and thus looks to what best justifies the law as a whole. Legal interpretivism has some similarities with both natural law and legal positivism schools of thought (Venter, par. 7-14). Natural law has some basics rules consisting of fairness, justice and also equity that ââ¬Å"positiveâ⬠law ought to respect. On the other hand, legal positivism states that laws are created by human societies but were not discovered by nature and that they do not have any inherent connection to either justice or ethics. Therefore, legal interpretivism agrees that there is an external purpose for the law and that the law is a product of human societies. Due to the merger of the two schools of thought, legal interpretivism would be most suitable for supervisors since they would be following both positive and natural
