Heartfailure readmissions Research Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words
Heartfailure readmissions - Research Paper Example Thus, it is not a shock that heart failure hospitalization is the focus for quality improvement, as well as cost reduction efforts (Wang, 2013). The CMS - Center for Medicare and Medicaid Service has made it compulsory to report hospital-level 30-day readmission rates for heart failure plus acute myocardial infarction in an attempt to enhance outcomes (Simpson, 2014). For this paper, I will be focusing on the safety aspects of heart failure and what we as nurses can do to boost self-management. Since a huge part of self-management includes education, collaboration with healthcare providers, and the actions/behaviors of patients, I will focus on issues such as adhering to the prescribed medication regimen, diet and exercise, and managing stress/emotions. The paper will also describe the barriers to healthy behaviors in the community and describes the priority health concerns and nature of the problem. Patients with heart failure develop harsh conditions due to this illness which affects their safety (Gerdes & Lcrenz, 2013). These safety concerns include severe weight gain, worsening shortness of breath, new or worsening leg swelling, inability to sleep without sitting up, difficulty breathing during the night, which is affected by widespread coughing, chest pain of a heavy feeling in the chest area and finally lack of weight loss effect from extra water pills (Warden et al., 2014). With a small planning, as well as support from nurses, heart failure patients can live safely and comfortably (Wang, 2013). An important consideration might be how remaining in hospital might improve the patients quality of life plus be a genuine source of happiness to the patient. Efforts to enhance heart failure care have focused on clinical and physiological variables, hospital and provider performance, as well as pubic reporting on quality heart failure indicators to recognize and characterize pati ent risk (Warden et al., 2014). To date, there has been far less

An investigation into the impact of control management practices on Essay
An investigation into the impact of control management practices on employee performance at British Airways - Essay Example From a future-oriented perspective, control can be seen as the ââ¬Å"exercise of influence over the actions and decisions of othersâ⬠(Camillus, 1986:9). The remedial perspective has of late been set aside as old-fashioned. The future oriented perspective has more relevance today. Early research (Antony, Dearden and Vancil, 1972:2) had concluded that every control system essentially has four elements, namely, a detector or sensor, an assessor, an effector and a communications network. These respectively are linked to measuring problems, determining the importance, altering behavior and transmitting information to all those who are concerned (Antony, Dearden and Vancil, 1972:2). Management control was defined by Antony, Dearden and Vancil (1972:6) as ââ¬Å"the process by which managers influence other members of the organization to implement the organizationââ¬â¢s strategiesâ⬠(Antony, Dearden and Vancil, 1972:2). This is only a primary level definition when compared to the advanced thoughts involved in the current management studies. A recent management theory book (Macintosh and Quattrone, 2010:3) has drawn attention to the phenomenon that half of the world thinks control is undesirable and against freedom and the rest believe that the world is in c haos and needs to be more in control. As management theoreticians went on having a deeper understanding of this concept, a consensus was evolved where bureaucratic control is replaced by intelligent control (Leitch, 2008:8). Today control management systems are designed so as to ââ¬Å"give each person the benefits of effective and helpful supervision while information about control performance is moved efficiently upwards and usedâ⬠(Leitch, 2008:101). Control management now involves setting the standards for effective performance, evaluation of performance according to those standards and altering behavior to better the performance if any lacuna is found. If the standards are not being met, there have

Fluoride Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1500 words
Fluoride - Essay Example Since calcium bonds correspondingly robustly with the fluoride ion, the fluoride ions are much less available than in the synthetically created fluoride. The synthetic composites are more noxious since they are more soluble in water and the fluoride dislocates from the composite (Davidson, 2003). The maximum quantity of fluoride is suggested to around 1 ppm (parts per million). For instance, at 1ppm an individual would drink 1 mg of fluoride in 1 liter of water. However, the differences take local situations, which affect the quantity of water one drinks, into account. Nevertheless, fluoride can be taken in several means or sources. Processed foods and beverages manufactures in fluoridated areas contain high amounts. Vegetation consumes concentrating more in their exterior parts with leafy vegetations containing the most. Pesticides sprayed on plants also contain fluoride. Tea has 160-660 ppm optimizing at 1 mg per 6 cups. A lot of activities which take raw materials from the earthâ â¬â¢s core and focus them to high temperatures release fluorides,. Fluorine composites are associated with the creation of aluminum, uranium, bricks, cement, and steel, amid others. The aluminum industry produces the highly toxic by-product fluo-spar from aluminum slag. In the nuclear industry, hydrogen fluoride and elemental fluorine are utilized in uranium production. For a lot of these industries fluorides present the largest disposal challenge. Steel and aluminum industries emitting fluoride air pollution have been castigated for devastating plants and laming cattle, oxidization of steel bridges and cause of death smogs. In Dona, Pennsylvania, 1948 a fluoride rich fog from the cityââ¬â¢s zinc mill murdered 20 people (Masters & Coplan, 1999). Phosphate fertilizer plants have also caused fluoride damage to animal and vegetation life in their locality. The appliance of phosphate fertilizers t soil severely rises fluorides in the soil which amount to consumption by plants we la ter eat and infectivity of drinking water through run off. Research studies project that the people of Aichi in Japan were taking up as much as 11 mg of fluoride a day from meals they were consuming. What these illustrations suggest is that we are already exposed to high amounts of fluoride. By fluoridating our water, we still raise the baggage, dislocating fluoride further through the environment where it gathers and established its way back into our meal products. Fluoride toothpaste alone were toting up 116 00o pounds of fluoride to the environment in the 70s. The occurrence of fluoride in high fronts and its connected challenges of drinking water existing in many parts of the world has been well documented. Fluoride present in drinking water is acknowledged for both its merits and harmful impacts on health. Many decisive solutions to these problems have thus far been given. Fluoride from water can be removed in numerous means. It can be removed either by an adsorption process of by a coagulation, precipitation process. The mode appropriate for an offered circumstance required to bee shrewdly chosen with regard to numerous factors (Urbansky & Schock, 2000). According to Urbansky & Schock (2000), water is one of the primary elements fundamental for maintenance of all types of life and is accessible in adequacy in nature occupying just about three fourths of the surface of the

Peachtree summize Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1250 words
Peachtree summize - Essay Example The current pressure stems from standardization in other sectors such as banking that cannot be fully afforded to more critical areas like healthcare without great thought. Moreover, recent failures at new Peachtree Healthcare acquisitions are pressuring management to go for an overhaul of the current IT infrastructure. Change of Opinion Before looking into the commentaries, I was more focused on the technical aspect of the problem with regards to implementing either SOA or a monolithic system. The human aspect of the problem as advocated by Kastor was not under consideration while framing recommendations. Moreover, my approach to problem solving for Peachtree Healthcare was more dependent on deriving a fitting monolithic, SOA or hybrid monolithic SOA framework for Peachtree Healthcare but as advocated by Halvorson, such a resolution would not be possible without considering the objectives that require achievement. Creating and maintaining an effective corporate strategy requires tha t objectives are taken into primary focus before any other implementations are considered (Johnson, Scholes, & Whittington, 2008). Ranking Commentator Opinions George C. Halvorson Paul Leflerââ¬â¢s standardization approach will not be able to deliver results for all parts of the healthcare sector in the case of Peachtree Healthcare. ... Another notable aspect of Halvorsonââ¬â¢s approach is his critique on trying to use tools without realizing what objectives require achievement. In this respect, Halvorson is totally justified in commenting that Peachtree Healthcare should tabulate its needs and requirements and should then proceed to procure fitting tools. Monte Ford Ford essentially raises an important point and then fails to see through it ââ¬â risk management. Ford suggests that Peachtree Healthcare should tabulate the available risk but this is not really possible given the eclectic nature of operations at any healthcare institution. He further suggests that Peachtree Healthcare should follow Candaceââ¬â¢s opinion of implementing a ââ¬Å"modular SOAâ⬠structure (Glaser, 2007) while keeping in mind areas where such a solution would work and where it would not. Again, the recommendation provided by Ford is largely vague and unrealizable since risk tabulation for what would work and what would not w ork requires taking risks that might entail patientââ¬â¢s lives. Providing analogies for an airline reservation system and a clinicââ¬â¢s basic systems is also illogical since clinical operations are too varied to be standardized this simply. For example, a patient requiring treatment for a common cold would differ significantly from a patient requiring treatment for tuberculosis. Randy Heffner Randy Heffnerââ¬â¢s ideas are best summarized by his last line in the commentary when he states that Candace should ââ¬Å"redo her decision analysis and strategy planning, looking at SOA through a business lensâ⬠(Glaser, 2007). Heffner is right at declaring the rising popularity and efficacy of SOA but

The Cost of Illegal Immigrants in Texas Research Paper - 1
The Cost of Illegal Immigrants in Texas - Research Paper Example This quote is an extract from the Dallas Morning News, which examined the financial effects of the illegal immigrants in Texas. This calculation was done on behalf of the millions of taxpayers who were paying heavily in tax dollars for the presence of illegal immigrants residing in the state. The reason why this problem is especially prominent in Texas as opposed to the other forty-nine states of America is that this state is situated at the very south of the country. Due to its location, it is very near to Mexico, and thus Mexicans illegally emigrating from their own land often settle down or take refuge in this state. Thus, there are thousands of such unregistered immigrants residing in the state of Texas, the costs of which are paid for by the taxpayers and legal inhabitants of Texas, as well as the government responsible. The reason why the presence of these illegal immigrants proves to be such a financial challenge for the legal citizens of this state is that they consume the public goods, which the government provides to the residents of this country. The US, being a developed country, provides several such goods to its citizens, such as health, education, and defense. These are all public goods, which it provides to every citizen of the country. These costs are especially prominent concerning health care costs, which these illegal immigrants incur. As research shows, ââ¬Å"Theà Texasà Hospital Association has estimated the annualà costà of uncompensated care to illegal immigrantsà at nearly $400 million a yearâ⬠(A Lone Star Report, 2006). In addition, as mentioned in the news extract above, these costs included the cost of 66,000 births in one year, which makes up a large proportion of these costs. These services however are not completely free of cost for these citizens. The government finances them using the tax dollars that these citizens themselves pay out of their own incomes, in the form of both direct and

Crusading Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2000 words
Crusading - Essay Example Thus, the crusade indulgence initially was identical to that ensured by the pilgrimage to the Holy places. The Crusades, which meant fighting for the defence of Christians, came to be considered as a work of piety. Political and military success was of little importance. Pope Urban II solemnly proclaimed the first crusade at the council of Clermont on 27th Nov. 1095 with a double objective, namely to relieve the pressure of the Seljuk Turks on the Eastern Empire and to secure free access to Jerusalem for pilgrims since the latter were abused and robbed by the Moslems and Arabs. He promised full remission of sins to all joining in the expedition. This call was in response to Alexius I call for help (Alexius Byzantine emperor - Byzantine Empire under attack from the Turks). This crusade was the most successful from the military point from the military point. The historian Raymond Agiles describing the capture of Jerusalem by the crusaders in 1099 wrote ''that some of our men cut off the heads of their enemies; others shot them with arrows, so that they fell from the towers; others tortured them longer by casting them into the flames. Piles of heads, hands and feet were to be seen in the streets of the city. It was necessary to pick one's way over the bodies of men and horses. However, these were small matters compared to what happened at the temple of Solomon, a place where religious services were ordinarily chanted. What happened there If I tell the truth, it will exceed your powers of belief. So let it suffice to say this much at least, that in the temple and portico of Solomon, men rode in blood up to their knees and bridle reins.''1 The Crusades took on a new meaning later on. It became a military expedition and no longer a pilgrimage of unarmed pilgrims. The Church moved away from the sole aim of the crusades which was the liberation of the Holy Land from the invasion of the Turks and it began using the Crusades to serve the church's own interest. Preaching of crusades became a device used by the church against the enemy states of the church. Personal enemies of the churches high-powered officials were sent on pilgrimages with the hope that you do not come back however, the means by which your death is brought about. The crusades increased the powers of European kings in that a number of barons who had given them trouble were sent to the east. Holy wars were authorised by the Popes in defence of the Christendom and the church. The crusades were used to defend the church against the infidels in the East, Germany and Spain, against heretics (Albigenses) and schematics who threatened catholic unity and against Christian lay powers who opposed the papacy. They were also used to defend the Papal States. The crusades started with a religious reason but it deteriorated to selfish reasons. These could be attributed to many reasons. The Papal States had to protect its territories from invasion by other states so it used the crusades as a papal military defence operation to defend these territories and the

Synthesis Research Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2250 words
Synthesis - Research Paper Example The Serpent of Paradise was written by Edward Abbey. And in this work he focuses on his experience like a park ranger in the south-eastern Utahââ¬â¢s Arches National Monument. The most important themes of Edward Abbey are- exploitationââ¬â¢s of pristine environment by the tourists and Peopleââ¬â¢s kinship towards the animals. The Themes Present in the Works: ââ¬Å"The deliverance considered as the engaging, suspenseful, full of fast-paced mystery and beautiful prose describing the natural environment that will soon be destroyed by a power companyââ¬â¢s damâ⬠(Cusatis p.110). The main theme of Deliverance is that of the survival in the nature against its overpowering odds. And the main themes that are present in the Serpents of Paradise are- exploitationââ¬â¢s of pristine environment by the tourists and Peopleââ¬â¢s kinship towards the animals. Some of the other themes as present in the Most Dangerous game are; Arrogance: Rainsford, an arrogant animal hunter an d he have no pain or fear. And Zaroff, another arrogant hunter and he feel that in order to entertain himself, he should hunt humans. Violence: It relates to the behavior of characters towards each other and also towards the surrounding animals. Degradation of man: ââ¬Å"The final and most prevalent theme is the Degradation of Manâ⬠(Marin p.5). It deals with the degradation of man from being a mere animal hunter to being a hunter of man and the changes from being hunter to that of a murderer. The Common Themes in these Works: While comparing the works of The Deliverance, The Serpents of Paradise and The Most Dangerous Game; we can find a common theme which is present in all these works i.e., the attitude of humans towards the nature. Manââ¬â¢s struggle and survival in the wilderness. All these works focus on this particular theme and the author portrays this theme with various incidents In Deliverance, James Dickey represents the theme in such a way that before the journey starts, the three among the four travellers does not have any experience in the journey through the forest. Lewis Medlock who is one among the four is a survivalist and seasoned outdoorsmen who really plans the journey and guides the group. The centerpiece of the novel is that of the sexual assault and the attack by two mountaineers in the river bank and which leads to a sequence of murder. During the journey they faced a lot of conflicts from the nature and from men. And they struggled a lot to overcome these difficulties that is, during their canoe ride they confronted with the Rough River and also they confronted a conflict with the two hillbillies. Even though one among the four died and they tried to have a struggle with the local men in the wood and they were able to escape from it. All these incidents show that man struggles for survival and they all learn an experience from this journey. In the beginning of the story, Ed was lacking the knowledge about the nature and after facing all the difficulties through the journey, their attitude toward the journey have changed a lot and they consider nature as more powerful and as a result they opinioned that respect should be given to the nature. In the Serpents of Paradise by Edward Abbey, he is viewing the Arches national park as wilderness. This work gives the
